An upscaler does not recover detail. It guesses.
An upscaler does not recover detail that was never captured. It predicts what detail would plausibly have been there and draws it in. Almost everything that separates one tool from another follows from how it makes that guess, and how willing it is to be wrong.

What are some effective methods for enhancing image quality for photographers and marketers?
Read it“Enhance” is not a real operation. A 500-pixel-wide photograph does not contain the information in a 2000-pixel-wide one, and no amount of processing puts it back. What a modern upscaler does is generate detail consistent with what it has seen before. That is genuinely useful, and it is also why results can be confidently, invisibly wrong - a face gets a texture it never had, a sign gets letters it never bore.
More on how that prediction works in What Is an AI Image Upscaler? A Plain-English Guide.
Method
Three ways of getting bigger
Every upscaling tool works in one of three ways, or a mix of them, and the marketing rarely says which one is doing the work.
| Approach | What it does | Where it struggles |
|---|---|---|
| Interpolation bicubic, Lanczos | Averages between existing pixels. Adds no information and invents nothing. | Gets soft fast. Past about 2× the result reads as a blur rather than a bigger picture. |
| Learned super-resolution ESRGAN family | A model trained on pairs of small and large images predicts the missing detail. | Amplifies whatever was already wrong - JPEG blocking, noise, prior sharpening. |
| Generative diffusion-based | Redraws the image at the target size, guided by the original. | Most willing to invent. Strongest results and the most opportunity to be wrong about faces and text. |

Tells
Signs the detail was invented
None of these mean a tool is bad. They mean the output needs looking at before it goes anywhere that matters.
Waxy skin
Pores and fine hair are replaced with a smooth, slightly plastic surface. The most common giveaway, because skin texture is exactly the sort of high-frequency detail that gets lost first and approximated most confidently.
Text that has become other text
Letterforms are structured enough that a model will happily resolve a blur into crisp, wrong characters. Any image with a sign, a licence plate or a document in it needs checking against the original before use.
Halos along hard edges
A bright or dark fringe tracing a roofline or a shoulder is over-sharpening, not detail. It tends to appear where the source had already been sharpened once.
Seams on large images
Big inputs are often processed in tiles and stitched. Where the tiles meet you can get a faint grid, or a patch where texture changes character mid-surface.
A face that is no longer the same face
Dedicated face-restoration models run separately from the main upscale and are aggressive by design. They can return a sharp, healthy, subtly different person - which matters enormously for a portrait and not at all for a landscape.

Before you pick one
Questions that decide it
What is the source?
A clean photograph and a twice-saved screenshot are different problems. Compression artefacts get upscaled too, and a tool that handles one may make the other worse.
How much can it be wrong?
For a print backdrop, invention is free. For anything evidential, documentary or legal, a plausible fabrication is worse than a soft image.
What are the limits of the free tier?
Output resolution caps, watermarks and queue times are where free tools actually differ, and they are usually stated somewhere other than the landing page.
